Specialist Classes

At Charles Weston School, every student has the opportunity to participate in a range of specialist subjects. These programs add richness and depth to our International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), allowing students to explore their passions, develop new skills, and make meaningful connections to their classroom learning. Our specialist teachers bring expertise and creativity that broaden students’ experiences and nurture curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning.

Teacher Librarian  - Melanie Mengel

Our library is the heart of our school, supporting students from Preschool through to Year 6 on their learning journey. As part of our PYP community, the library is more than a place to borrow books; it is a hub of inquiry, creativity, and connection. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of texts that foster a love of reading, promote mother tongue languages, and celebrate diverse perspectives. Through rich literacy experiences, our library nurtures international mindedness and empowers students to become curious, knowledgeable, and compassionate lifelong learners.

Our library is run by a full-time, qualified teacher librarian who works with classes on book selection, building a reading culture, and learning research skills. All classes visit the classes weekly, and the space is open every break time as a quiet space, separate to the busy playground.

Performing Arts Teacher - Jan Lloyd

Our Performing Arts program is designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and encourage every student from Preschool to Year 6 to express themselves. Through music, drama, and movement, students develop the courage to take risks, the resilience to keep trying, and the joy of sharing their talents with others. More than performance, the program nurtures communication skills, teamwork, and self-belief, empowering students to grow as confident individuals who value both their own voice and the voices of others.

Music Teacher- Susan Curbishley

Charles Weston School values music education. Our K-6 Music Program is designed around the ACARA Version 9 curriculum, where students explore the key elements of music including beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics. Music is taught in an inclusive environment where every child is supported to be successful despite ability. Using the PYP Inquiry approach, students engage in hands-on learning that encourages curiosity and creativity. This inquiry-based learning also supports the development of Approaches to Learning Skills (ATLS) such as creative thinking, communication, and collaboration. Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of music, helping students become confident, expressive, and passionate musicians.

Health and Physical Education Teacher - Matt O'Dwyer

At Charles Weston School, Physical Education is a vital part of every child’s development. Our comprehensive PE program supports students in developing fundamental movement skills, enhancing physical fitness, and building confidence through a diverse range of activities, including cooperative games, gymnastics, and wide range of sports. Students enjoy a weekly PE session with our specialist teacher, along with daily opportunities to stay active in the classroom. Our program also promotes teamwork, fair play, and healthy lifestyle choices. We aim to inspire every child to enjoy being active and to lay the foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity.
